Spending on technology in the world will fall due to political uncertainty

Smartphones will represent 47% of expenses

World spending on technology products for the general public will fall this year due to several factors, such as the strengthening of the dollar and the political uncertainty derived from Brexit and the arrival of Donald Trump to the White House. Consumers around the world will spend $ 929 billion worldwide on smartphones and other devices, compared to $ 950 billion in 2016, according to the American association of the sector, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA).

The director of market studies of the CTA, Steve Koenig, revealed this Tuesday in Las Vegas, before the opening of the annual CES show, that this forecast is based on the "uncertainty after the election of Trump and Brexit", the vote in favor of the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union. "This environment of uncertainty is sure to impact consumer spending, investments of companies and governments," said Koenig. In his opinion, the strength of the dollar is also "an important impact", by reducing the amounts spent on technology in other currencies, as well as the price decreases for some products, such as tablets.

Revenues from the sector are still heavily dependent on smartphones, which this year will account for 47% of spending on electronics among the general public on a global scale, although its growth - both in terms of sales volumes and revenues -, start to moderate "The smartphone is at the center of the technology consumer universe," Koenig said.
