Cellnex denounces Atlantis's takeover of Abertis

The technology firm announces investments of 2,000 million euros in two years

Cellnex Telecom, an independent operator of telecommunications infrastructures listed on the Ibex-35, held its annual shareholders meeting this morning, in which the company's accounts for the year 2016 have been approved unanimously. A meeting marked by the OPA launched by the Italian company Atlantia over Abertis, a leading shareholder of Cellnex with 34% of the shares.

In the press conference after the meeting, the heads of the firm wanted to make clear that they would not answer anything about Abertis: "I will not answer absolutely nothing about Abertis", said the president of the company, Francisco Reynés.

"Cellnex is linked to Cellnex and Cellnex is a solid and independent project," he said. "To say that we are linked to the future of Abertis is to underestimate the company and Cellnex's ability to be an independent adult," he assured. Reynés has also insisted that Abertis will "never" be a partner that could "slow down" the evolution and development of Cellnex and has specified that the company does not set "any horizon of disinvestment or increase of participation" of Abertis. "We are comfortable with this 34%", he assured.

Reynés has transferred to the meeting that the management of the company is "especially happy" with the results of the group. For two reasons. In his opinion, the firm is "exceeding the results that were targeted when it went public two years ago," since Cellnex is present in five countries. In addition, he pointed out that the market, except for some swing of the stock, "has recognized the ability to create value." "The 2017 results account will be better", he predicted.

According to the figures of the company participated by Abertis, in the last two years Cellnex has announced more than 2,000 million euros in investments, aimed at growth projects in Europe. In 2016, the Spanish company based in Barcelona closed new acquisitions in Italy, France (CommsCon), France (Bouygues), the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

The board has also approved the expansion of its board of directors from nine to ten members, with the incorporation of Marieta del Rivero as a new independent director. Thus, 50% of the company's directors are independent.
